Holiday décor & plants (pet safety)

If ingested, mistletoe and holly can cause gastrointestinal upset and possibly cardiovascular problems.  Many types of flower lilies that are found in holiday bouquets are highly toxic.  Poinsettias can make pets sick with mild to severe gastrointestinal irritation.

Keep holiday floral decorations out of paws reach OR, replace your holiday plant decor with a faux alternative!

  • Christmas trees should be secured so that there is no chance for them to fall over and cause injury.  If you have a real tree, make sure the water component is covered so that pets cannot drink out of it (may contain chemicals, preservatives, fertilizers, pesticides, even aspirin).

  • Tinsel, if ingested, can cause your pet to experience severe vomiting, indigestion, and can cause intestinal blockage and damage leading to emergency surgery.

  • Snow globes, if broken, contain ethylene glycol (the same chemical used in antifreeze). It gives off a very sweet and attractive scent to pets. If ingested, it can lead to fatal consequences. Be sure to keep these out of reach and promptly clean up any accidental breakages.
